Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In response to a series of complaints regarding illegal firecracker factories operating in various districts of West Bengal, the state administration has announced a specialized strategy. Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials are set to launch a concerted effort to eradicate these illicit operations across the state.
Key developments and initiatives include:
1. Tragedy in Barasat: The urgency of this action follows a tragic incident in Dattpukur, Barasat, where a deadly explosion claimed ten lives and caused significant damage to nearby residences. Investigations revealed that illegal bomb manufacturing activities were taking place within the premises, raising concerns about the safety of such establishments.
2. No New Licenses for Firecracker Factories: Chief Secretary Harikrishna Dwivedi has issued a directive to District Magistrates, urging them to refrain from granting licenses to new firecracker factories at the district level. This move is part of an effort to curb the proliferation of illegal operations. Superintendents of Police have also received warnings to remain vigilant in this regard.
3. Enhanced Surveillance and Raids: The Chief Secretary has instructed authorities to intensify surveillance efforts through the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and, if necessary, conduct raids on all factories suspected of producing illegal firecrackers. As part of this initiative, the Baruipur police have already conducted a search at the Champahati Baji factory, utilizing drones to inspect for illegal betting or hoarding activities. During the operation, illegal firecrackers were confiscated from several residences.
The state's decisive actions aim to address the immediate dangers posed by illegal firecracker factories and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Heightened vigilance and enforcement measures will be central to these efforts.
